The light fades as she runs for her life, the forest now becoming quieter around her. The only noise she hears is the sound of footsteps following her…

It’s hiking season in Black Rock Falls and the small town in Montana is flooded with visitors. But when a hiker finds a human skull on a deserted trail in the woods that surround the town, Detective Jenna Alton is called in to investigate.

With no missing persons reported, Jenna has no leads. Then her team makes a shocking discovery – the body of another hiker, a young man, tied to a tree and riddled with bullets. Could the two murders be linked?

As more bodies are found, Jenna and her deputy David Kane know that they must venture deep into the forest to find and face the killer. But nothing can prepare them for what awaits them there…

Author D. K. Hood took time out of her busy day to discuss her latest thriller, THE CRYING SEASON, with The Big Thrill:

What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

THE CRYING SEASON is book 4 in the Kane and Alton series. It delves into the mind of a different type of psychopath. It reminds readers not to take people at face value. I hope the characters of Kane and Alton remain with the readers long after the final page and they’ll be waiting for the next book in the series.

How does this book make a contribution to the genre?

The Kane and Alton series of crime thrillers are fast paced. THE CRYING SEASON will take the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions. My readers say they can’t put my books down and THE CRYING SEASON is no different than the other books in the series. Thrills and chills from the first page to the last.

Was there anything new you discovered, or that surprised you, as you wrote this book?

I discover something new every time I research a story. From poisons to new forensic techniques and the behavior of many types of killers. I’m surprised how interesting the research can be and how it opens up so many possibilities for new stories.

What authors or books have influenced your career as a writer, and why?

I’m a crime thriller addict and I devour a lot of books. I’m constantly looking for new authors to enjoy. Some of my favorites are David Baldacci, John Sandford, Lee Child, Heather Graham and Tami Hoag.

Have they influenced my career? Hmm, that would be difficult to say because I have my own style and voice, but knowing authors can be successful did push me to take the first step into writing crime thrillers.

Known for her wicked sense of humor, D. K. Hood was the kid who told ghost stories around the campfire. Writing crime thrillers for Bookouture (Hachette UK) has been a dream come true for her. The success of Don’t Tell a Soul reaching the Top 100 Bestseller list on Amazon in the USA, Canada and Australia plus three genre bestsellers lists followed by Bring Me Flowers enjoying the same success, has spurred her on to write more thrilling novels in the Kane and Alton series.

Her interest in the development of forensic science to solve crime goes back many years. It is one subject she enjoys studying above all others because with the constant advances, it never gets boring.
