Celebrating freedom in Sin City with an Alimontini

We all know Las Vegas, with its eclectic range of chapels is a mecca for weddings and honeymoons. It’s a favorite spot for bachelor and bachelorette parties. Remember, what they say, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!

But recently it’s become a hotspot for divorce parties. Once taboo or considered a somber affair, divorce celebrations are now embraced as empowering, fun, and even therapeutic events that mark the end of one chapter and the exciting start of another. Vegas, with its neon-lit allure, party-hard reputation and glamorous nightclubs, is the perfect backdrop for the celebration of new beginnings. When researching my new novel, The Divorce Party, I discovered it’s a thriving industry with its own set of unique characteristics.

One of the hallmarks of a successful divorce party in Vegas is the invitation. Unlike traditional invites, these have become playful and cheeky, often featuring bold graphics and humorous wording. For example, invitations might read, “Officially Unhitched,” “I Do – I Did – I’m Done,” or “Loser-Free Zone!” with vibrant colors, glitter, or even holographic effects. Some people opt for personalized invites that include inside jokes or nods to the couple’s shared history, transforming the stationery into a keepsake and conversation starter.

Cocktails at these parties often reflect a sense of liberation and fun. Think “Rum Baby Rum,” “Freedom Fizz,” “Alimontini” or “Rebound Margarita,” creatively named to match the mood of independence. Bartenders in Vegas are masters at crafting themed drinks, often served in glitzy glassware, garnished with playful touches like edible glitter or colorful umbrellas. For an extra touch of flair, some party hosts hire mixologists to create signature cocktails that symbolize the new chapter—perhaps a spicy jalapeño martini to reflect boldness or a bubbly champagne punch to toast fresh starts.

Music playlists for Vegas divorce parties are all about empowering and energizing the crowd. DJs and hosts curate tracks that celebrate liberation and self-empowerment, featuring tracks like “Go Your Own Way,” and “I’m Moving On” by Rascal Flatts. Karaoke segments are also popular. Belting out classic anthems like “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor” or “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John is a perfect way to leave all the hurt behind and gather strength for the next chapter of their lives.

Game ideas and party activities are designed to combine fun with a touch of catharsis. Customized game stations include “Divorce Bingo,” where traditional bingo cards are filled with humorous or relatable divorce-related scenarios (“Ex forgot anniversary”) or empowering affirmations. A “Lie or Truth” game can have guests share funny or embarrassing breakup stories, while a “Ball and Chain” relay race adds physical fun. Additionally, some parties feature photo booths with hilarious props—signs reading “End of an Error,” or “I’m Done and Ready for Fun”, oversized sunglasses, and sashes that say “Divorced and Fabulous”.

Usually, the vibe of a Vegas divorce party is one of celebration, resilience, and new beginnings. It’s about recognizing the end of a chapter and embracing the freedom that comes with it. It’s a way to remind everyone that sometimes, the best way forward is to celebrate the journey—imperfections and all, transforming what was once viewed as a sad ending into a jubilant start of something new.

That’s the ideal scenario! Too bad the three women who reunite to celebrate their ex-college buddy and “frenemy”, Evie’s divorce, in my new novel, The Divorce Party, are in for some unwelcome and possibly deadly surprises.
