The homeless camps in the city are burning and Detective Emily Hunter soon finds that even the homeless have something that somebody wants. The attacks only begin to draw attention when two of the victims are identified as the city’s former anti-homeless mayor and a camp social worker. Who stands to gain? A most unusual suspect surfaces and Emily is struggling to balance her demanding job as a detective with caring for her Alzheimer’s stricken mother. Can Emily overcome resistance in the investigation and her personal obstacles to halt the attacks?

About the Author

The book draws some inspiration from L’Etoile’s experience working in the California prison system for 29 years—especially when it comes to supervising homeless parolees in the sprawling camps and makeshift shelters. There's a certain feeling of hopelessness and desperation common in these camps. River of Lies explores a bit of this and the people who come to find themselves existing in these places.
