The Big Thrill Discusses CODE RED with Kyle Mills

Mitch Rapp hates owing anyone a favor but when Damian Losa—the world’s most powerful crime lord—calls, Mitch is honor-bound to answer.

The Syrian government appears to have created a highly addictive new narcotic that it plans to distribute throughout Europe. It’s a major threat to Losa’s business and he’s determined to send someone to keep him on top by any means necessary. As Rapp crosses into war-torn Syria, he quickly discovers the new drug isn’t being produced by Damascus but was created by Russia’s asymmetrical warfare unit as a weapon against the West.

Rapp devises a desperate plan that forces him and his team onto a battlefield where the United States is virtually powerless and allegiances shift almost hourly. Further, if Russia uncovers their plot, it will set off a confrontation between the two countries that could change the course of human history.

New York Times bestselling author Kyle Mills recently spent some time with The Big Thrill discussing his latest thriller, CODE RED.

Can you pinpoint a moment or incident that sparked the idea for this book?

It was less a moment in time than the slow evolution of the threats facing America. Our enemies have discovered that charging straight at us isn’t going to work and they are now creating sophisticated asymmetrical warfare protocols. How are we going to face those new challenges, particularly when we’re beset by internal divisions that are so easy to exploit?

A novel is such a major undertaking; there’s the writing of it, of course, then you’re spending months and months revising, polishing, and then promoting it. How did you know this was the book you wanted to spend the next couple of years on?

I like writing about the dangers I see lurking just around the corner and I’ve had a pretty good track record of predicting them. The face of our enemies, their methods, and their goals have changed significantly over the last decade and thrillers need to keep up.

In addition to a great read, what do you hope readers will take away from this story?

That America needs to pull itself together. We’re getting to the point that our enemies may not have to do anything to defeat us other than sit back and watch us destroy ourselves.

What can you share about what you’re working on next?

CODE RED is my last Rapp novel and I’ll be resurrecting a character named Fade that I wrote about years ago. He’s the perfect vehicle to continue exploring a world that’s changing at breakneck speed and the dangers those changes pose.
