Can you pinpoint a moment or incident that sparked the idea for this book?

Oddly enough, yes. LOL. I usually say no, but in this case, I was watching a show on television. I can’t remember the show, but it was something like NCIS. Anyway, there was a hearse carrying a coffin and it crashed and the coffin flew out of the back and landed with a crash. The body flew out and of course everyone was completely wigged out. I decided I wanted a scene like that in one of my stories. Well, I ended up changing that whole part of the story for various reasons, but that was the initial scene idea that triggered the story characters etc.

When you first created your protagonist for this book, did you see an empty space in crime lit that you wanted to fill? What can you share about the inspiration for that character?

I’m not sure it was an empty space I was looking to fill, but I wanted to create a character who had been gaslighted (gaslit??) and found a way to overcome that without a whole lot of outside help. Sure, she would have some outside influences and close friends who caused her to take a good, hard look at her situation, but she basically rescued herself from an abusive situation. I just can only hope I did that justice.

What can you share about what you’re working on next?

I’ve just turned in the second book in the series and am now working on a novella that will be part of an anthology collection with Lynn H. Blackburn and Natalie Walters. Then, I will turn in book #3 in the Lake City Heroes series with Jesslyn McCormick, a fire marshal who hates fire and Detective Nathan Carlisle who has his own set of issues thanks to the death of a sibling in his past.
