Vincent Zandri recently spent some time with The Big Thrill discussing his domestic thriller, AMERICAN CRIME STORY.

Can you pinpoint a moment or incident that sparked the idea for this book?

Like so many people, including writers, I loved Breaking Bad and Ozark, and other similar programs. I wanted to write my own “normal people caught up in extraordinary life threatening” circumstances. I ended up with 5 books and about 130,000 words.

A novel is such a major undertaking; there’s the writing of it, of course, then you’re spending months and months revising, polishing, and then promoting it. How did you know this was the book you wanted to spend the next couple of years on?

I wrote this very quickly over a two-month sprint in the summer of 2022.

Were there any particular books, movies, or songs that were knocking around in your head while you were writing this one?

Like I said, Breaking Bad and Ozark were definitely an influence. But it’s all original Vincent Zandri right down the neighborhood I used to live in.

In addition to a great read, what do you hope readers will take away from this story?

People who think their life is basically over, especially middle-aged folks, should keep in mind that life can change from one second to the next…change dramatically. One minute you’re working the boring job, wondering how you’re going to pay the bills and the next, your wife has mistakenly run over a drug kingpin, and become rich in the process. Things like that tend to change people dramatically.
