Carly Jenner is a rising star attorney at one of the most prestigious law firms in New York City: Barr Knoll LLP, named for the larger-than-life founder for whom Carly has wanted to work since she was a little girl. Carly’s closest friend at the firm and in life is her colleague, Rain Street – the brilliant, gritty daughter of a prominent film star. Rain is obsessed with the fate of three former Barr Knoll associates known colloquially as the “Triplets” as they were inseparable friends and lawyers. Ten years earlier – following a boozy law firm function at Barr Knoll’s Riversedge New York estate – the Triplets crashed their car on the way home. The circumstances of the Triplets’ death raised the suspicions of the local DA, and manslaughter charges were filed. But the charges were quickly dismissed and the files were sealed.

When Rain goes missing after a drunken night, Carly doesn’t know what to make of her disappearance. But clues are starting to point to a powerful woman at the center of the Triplets’ case – whose identity is still unknown. She is referred to only as the “Times Square Madam” in redacted legal papers and for years she apparently worked with young female associates at Barr Knoll. In a dual timeline flashing between the present day and more than a decade earlier when the Triplets were still alive, a story unravels of lies and deception and power grabs at Barr Knoll from the past that have had a lasting ripple effect. Carly and Rain have been unwittingly caught in a firestorm not of their own making, and suddenly Carly finds herself in a life and death race against time to save her career, Rain, and so much more.

BARR NONE is a story of corruption, secrets, alliances, betrayal, and an unsolved murder case, all set against the backdrop of New York City Big Law, written by former Big Law insider, Amy Impellizzeri. TheBigThrill caught up with award-winning author Amy Impellizzeri to see what we could find out about her latest legal thriller:

Amy Impellizzeri

When you first created your protagonist for this book, did you see an empty space in crime lit that you wanted to fill? What can you share about the inspiration for that character?

Absolutely! Both Carly and Rain are nuanced and flawed and strong characters whose mothers and other female mentors have had a profound impact on them—both negatively and positively.

In addition to a great read, what do you hope readers will take away from this story?

I hope we will all take a hard look at how we are mentoring a new generation of women in the law and elsewhere!

What can you share about what you’re working on next?

Book 3 of the Riversedge Law Club Series AND a standalone legal fiction novel.

Can you pinpoint a moment or incident that sparked the idea for this book?

Riversedge Law Club is the fictional embodiment of a lot of corruption, back alley law, and secret deals I witnessed in my years in BigLaw.

A novel is such a major undertaking; there’s the writing of it, of course, then you’re spending months and months revising, polishing, and then promoting it. How did you know this was the book you wanted to spend the next couple of years on?

This female-centric, gritty legal thriller took hold of me and would not release me until I wrote it!
