Investigative reporter Rae Burke will do anything to find her missing sister-in-law, even if it means facing Liam McKade, a man who almost lost his life saving hers. A former DEA agent, Liam thought he could find peace at his Wyoming ranch, but he just doesn’t feel at home anywhere anymore. When the reporter who blew his cover on an important investigation inserts herself back into his life, he’s less than thrilled. But Rae’s keen investigative skills have led her down the right path—and directly into the dragon’s mouth—leaving Liam no choice but to protect her. As the danger increases, the past they both tried to flee catches up to them, along with the feelings they once had for each other.

Bestselling and award-winning author Elizabeth Goddard plunges you into a fast-paced, high-stakes story of honor, forgiveness, and justice.

The Big Thrill caught up with Goddard for a quick chat about her latest thriller, DON’T KEEP SILENT:

What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

As with all my books I hope they come away with a happy sigh and a satisfied feeling. I hope my characters linger in the hearts and minds of readers for a few hours if not days, after finishing the book. I hope, too, they will come away understanding a bit more about the criminal world around them, and the sacrifices being made by those who put themselves in harm’s way—whether reports or investigators or undercover agents—to make the world a safer place.

Was there anything new you discovered, or surprised you, as you wrote this book?

Most of my books are a discovery process as I write and unearth the plot, and allow the characters to come to life. I start with a basic premise and let the story unfold from there. That said, developing Rae’s background led me to researching about war zone journalists and the many sacrifices made  (including death) by reporters who put themselves in the middle of conflicts to give a voice to those innocents caught in the middle. I found their stories deeply moving and used that to infuse Rae’s character, to compel her into dangerous situations in her job as an investigative reporter so she could be a voice for the voiceless.

Which took shape first: plot, character, or setting?

Setting is always the inspiration for my stories. I love amazing settings and readers often comment on how the setting is so real for them in my stories. The backdrop usually plays an important role as well because I love to add adventure romance to the romantic suspense mix. Don’t Keep Silent is the third book in my Uncommon Justice series set in Jackson Hole Wyoming so I knew that I needed to write a winter story—a snow story. I needed a ski and snowmobile story because that’s a huge part of the Jackson Hole scene that I wanted to showcase. Snowcapped mountains, frozen wilderness and ski slopes all play a big role in the plot.
