Prolific author R. Barri Flowers sat down with The Big Thrill to discuss his latest anthology:

What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

I would like readers to feel a sense of history in this book, in terms of the old adage, “what goes around, comes around,” as it relates to the correlation between jealousy, passions, and murder that has been a part of landscape for centuries, and as such, is not a recent phenomenon.

How does this book make a contribution to the genre?

The book brings to life age-old true but forgotten compelling tales of love triangles that resulted in murder. It steps away from the more typical serial killer, mass murder, and terrorism true crime stories of modern times in genre.

Was there anything new you discovered, or that surprised you, as you wrote this book?

It was fascinating to discover in researching cases just what lengths some were willing to go to in a fit of homicidal rage that will be just as shocking to readers.

No spoilers, but what can you tell us about your book that we won’t find in the jacket copy or the PR material?

The book will hammer home the notion that when it comes to intimate relationships, if one side or the other decides to stray, it could prove to be a fatal error in judgement for someone — with all parties paying the price in one respect or another.

What authors or books have influenced your career as a writer, and why?

Numerous authors and books have influenced my writing career for what they brought to the table in terms of content, expertise, and substance.

Such authors include Samuel Dashiell Hammett, Daphne du Maurier, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Truman Capote, and Thomas Hardy.

Books include 84, Charing Cross Road, The Fatal Shore: The epic of Australia’s founding, The Grapes of Wrath, and Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders.
