When Victoria Bradford got engaged, she told herself to give love a chance. Six months later, she’s on the run from her angry, abusive ex-fiancé with her four-year-old daughter and nowhere to go.

Seventy miles north of Dallas, the Iron River Ranch is pretty much nowhere. That’s what its new owner, Josh Cain, wanted when he came back from Afghanistan. Big skies, quiet nights, no trouble.

One look tells Josh the pretty redhead with the adorable little girl will give him trouble of the most personal kind. But he’s seen trouble before, and he doesn’t scare easy. Not when “accidents” start happening around the ranch. Not when Tory’s best friend back in Phoenix is abducted and brutalized. Not even when it looks like their current problems are only the tip of the iceberg.

But if he gets too close to fierce, determined Tory, Josh knows his nights are going to be anything but quiet. And that’s one possibility no amount of training can prepare him for…

The Big Thrill caught up to New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin and had the opportunity to discuss her latest release, BEYOND CONTROL:

What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

I hope they have a fun, exciting adventure that will keep them on the edge of their seats. I hope they laugh, cry, and feel really good at the end.

Was there anything new you discovered, or that surprised you, as you wrote this book?

Every book is a learning experience. I do a lot of research, so there is always something new to learn.

No spoilers, but what can you tell us about your book that we won’t find in the jacket copy or the PR material?

Linc’s brother, Joshua Cain, is a former marine special operations sniper turned Texas rancher. Josh just wants his life back, wants time to figure things out after his years in the military. He’s enjoying the peace and quiet of the rural Texas landscape–until pretty, fiery haired Victoria Bradford shows up with her four-year-old daughter. Then all hell breaks loose.

Tory is being followed by a stalker. Damien Bridger means to have her, and no one, not even tough as nails Josh Cain, is going to stand in his way.

What authors or books have influenced your career as a writer, and why?

Wilbur Smith wrote one of the all-time great romances, Eagle in the Sky. One of the most powerful books I have ever read. I liked to read to the older romance authors, Anya Seaton, Frank Yerby, and of course Kathleen Woodiwiss.

They all wrote romance combined with suspense. I loved reading them, so it was natural for me to write in the Romantic Suspense genre.
